I studied fine art at Goldsmiths college in the late 70s and then realised I wanted o do something creative but practical so when I heard someone talking about Cordwainers college I knew I had to go there . I had been obsessed with shoes since childhood.I then madly opened a shoe shop in clapham and made shoes for 10 years .I made shoes for many people including Helena Bonham Carter ,Angela Carter , Seal, Annie Lennox ,Tom Dixon and Bros but it was hard work and my skin was reacting to the glue so I needed to think again.
I then went to Morley college once a week to learn machine knitting and happened to walk into Gabriel's wharf when a small shop was to let and although I couldn't really knit properly I thought I could somehow make it work.I have been knitting in my studio/shop on the Southbank for 20 years. My collection is knitted in British spun lambswool and Irish donegal merino then carefully felted to varying degrees. Garment fabric is then given to my seamstress who makes all my beautifully tailored clothing.
